Start from the private care home model (free sign-up). A private care home for older people (有料老人ホーム) is item (6)ロ(1) of Annexed Table 1 of Japan’s Fire Service Act Enforcement Order when its residents are mainly people of care level 3 to 5, and item (6)ハ(1) otherwise. In this article your AI takes the members’ private care home of twelve rooms as a single-storey building of its own and checks its fire equipment. It ran the same tools an AI calls over MCP. Every figure and number below comes from that run.

1. The home and where the extinguishers go

Plan of the private care home and the walk to an extinguisher
Seven rooms, the linen store and the staff room north of the middle corridor, five rooms, the bath and the dining room south of it; two extinguishers along the corridor, 11.71 m from the farthest point
  • The total floor is 30.0 × 13.0 m = 390 m² to the outer walls’ centrelines.
  • check_space finds nothing, with the extinguishers in place as well.

2. Mainly residents of care level 3 to 5, or not

People of care level 3 to 5 are those who need help to escape (Enforcement Regulation Article 5(5)). With check_space’s fireAlarm, extinguishers, hydrants and exitSigns, your AI checks both.

EquipmentMainly care level 3 to 5 ((6)ロ)Otherwise ((6)ハ)
SprinklersNeeded (but for a structure that holds a fire back)Not needed if single-storey
Automatic fire alarmNeeded (whatever the floor)Needed (whatever the floor)
Fire alarm that calls the fire serviceNeeded (a telephone will not do)Needed from 500 m² in all
ExtinguishersNeeded (whatever the floor)Needed (150 m² or more in all)
Indoor hydrantsNot needed (under 700 m² in all)Not needed (under 700 m² in all)
Exit lightsNeeded (every floor)Needed (every floor)
  • An automatic fire alarm is needed whatever the floor for item (6)ロ, and for an item (6)ハ where people live (Enforcement Order Article 21(1)(i)(a) and (b)).
  • Sprinklers are needed for item (6)ロ(1) whatever the floor (Article 12(1)(i)(b)). An item (6)ハ needs none unless it has 11 storeys or more, is a large building of more than one storey, or has a large basement or windowless floor (Article 12(1)(iii), (iv) and (xi)).
  • A fire alarm that calls the fire service is needed for item (6)ロ whatever the floor (Article 23(1)(i)), and for item (6)ハ from 500 m² (Article 23(1)(ii)). For neither will a telephone do instead (Article 23(3)).
  • The tools have no check for the sprinklers or the call to the fire service, so your AI read the order itself.

3. How many extinguishers, and where

Units neededUnits placedFrom the farthest pointWithin 20 m
Two along the corridor3.9611.71 mYes
  • The units needed are the total floor over 100 m², 3.9 (Enforcement Regulation Article 6). Your AI puts two extinguishers of three units each (an assumption) on the corridor’s north side, between the rooms’ doors (edit_space).
  • An extinguisher must be within a 20 m walk of every part of the floor (Article 6(6)(i)). The farthest point is 11.71 m away.

4. Exit lights

With exitSigns, your AI checks room by room whether any may be left out (Enforcement Regulation Article 28-2). No room sees the entrance, so neither the exit lights nor the passage lights may be left out.

RoomSees the entranceFrom the farthest point to the entrance
Rooms 1 and 8No8.13 m
Room 6No25.13 m
Room 7No28.12 m
Dining roomNo31.36 m
Staff roomNo32.82 m
  • The entrance is at the west end: from the dining room and the staff room to the east it is a walk of more than 30 m.

5. A fire prevention manager, and using the check

  • A fire prevention manager is needed from 10 occupants for item (6)ロ and from 30 for item (6)ハ (Enforcement Order Article 1-2(3)(i)(a) and (b)). The occupants are the staff and the residents together (Enforcement Regulation Article 1-3). For item (6)ロ, the residents of the twelve rooms alone come to more than 10.
  • Draw your home (from a PDF drawing or photos as well), and tell your AI its residents’ care levels, the total floor and the storeys.
  • Not checked: floors above the ground floor and the building as a whole, whether the structure holds a fire back, the number of detectors, flame-retardant curtains and the like, and notices to the fire department.
