Start from the hospital model (no sign-up needed; running a simulation is Pro). When a call comes while the night nurses are with other patients, the patient waits. In this article, on the hospital model’s 2nd-floor ward of 38 beds, your AI simulates the calls of a night. It ran the same tools an AI calls over MCP. Every number below comes from that run.
1. The ward and the night
- The 2nd-floor ward has 38 beds, in nine rooms of four and two single rooms, with the nurse station in the middle.

The AI wrote this flow as a scenario (put_process_scenario).
- From 22:00 to 6:00 the 38 patients call from their beds at random, each 2 times a night on average (help to the toilet, a drip’s alarm, pain and the like).
- The nurses wait at the nurse station; a free one goes to the bed and answers, for 8 minutes on average (4 to 16 minutes, most often 4).
- A call that comes while the nurses are with other patients waits until one is done.
- Every number and time is an assumption. Put in your own ward’s nights.
2. The calls and the nurses
The AI changed the calls a patient makes in a night (1, 2, 3) and the nurses on the night shift (2, 3) (sweep_process_parameters), 20 nights each. The wait is from the call until a nurse’s hands are free. The longest wait is the mean over the 20 nights of each night’s longest.
| Nurses | Calls a patient | Calls a night | Wait (mean) | Longest wait | Waiting at once (most) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | 1 | 40.0 | 0.8 min | 7.6 min | 2.0 |
| 2 | 2 | 77.7 | 4.3 min | 19.9 min | 4.9 |
| 2 | 3 | 116.7 | 27.5 min | 61.3 min | 14.8 |
| 3 | 1 | 40.0 | 0.1 min | 2.1 min | 0.9 |
| 3 | 2 | 77.7 | 0.7 min | 7.5 min | 2.8 |
| 3 | 3 | 116.7 | 2.2 min | 13.7 min | 5.2 |
- With two nurses and 2 calls a patient, a call waits 4.3 minutes on average, and the night’s longest wait is 19.9 minutes on average. At 3 calls these grow to 27.5 and 61.3 minutes.
- With three nurses, the wait is 2.2 minutes on average even at 3 calls.
- Once free, a nurse walks to the bed in 25.8 seconds on average: nearly all the wait is the call at another bed.
3. How long a call takes
At 2 calls a patient, the AI changed a call’s average time (5, 8, 12 minutes).
| Nurses | Call (mean) | Wait (mean) | Longest wait |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | 5 min | 0.8 min | 7.6 min |
| 2 | 8 min | 4.3 min | 19.9 min |
| 2 | 12 min | 31.0 min | 72.9 min |
| 3 | 5 min | 0.1 min | 2.7 min |
| 3 | 8 min | 0.7 min | 7.5 min |
| 3 | 12 min | 3.4 min | 18.4 min |
- With two nurses, calls of 12 minutes on average instead of 8 lengthen the wait from 4.3 to 31.0 minutes: the nurses’ hands are almost never free.
4. How to use this
- Draw your ward (from a PDF of the drawings or photos too), and tell the AI the calls of a night and how long a call takes. Counts taken from your call records bring it nearer the real nights.
- Not checked: the night shift’s other work (rounds, records, preparing drips), breaks and naps, patients who need two nurses, sudden deteriorations and admissions, nursing assistants, and the ward’s staffing standards.
